Building Repairs & Maintenance in Christchurch

The jobs that are too small for a big building company and too real for a handyman. Storm damage, insurance work, decks, fences, roofs and rot. We turn up when we say, price it straight, and finish it.

What we fix

If it's built of timber and it's gone wrong, it's probably us.

We can arrange and manage the design, the consents, the construction and the certification — or slot in alongside a designer you've already got.

Insurance, storm and EQC repairs

A lot of people think their insurer picks the builder. Usually you do.

Most insurers will let you choose your own builder on a repair claim. Some run their own panel — worth asking yours first. If you get the choice, get a proper quote from us and send it through with your claim.

We price it the way an assessor reads it

Scope, quantities and rates, itemised line by line, so the assessor can check it against their own numbers instead of arguing with a one-line total. It's the same way we price government housing contracts, so it stands up to being read properly.

We'll talk to your assessor about the building work and answer the technical questions. We won't argue your claim for you — that part is between you and your insurer.

What we get called out for

Storm and wind damage — roofs, spouting, fences, trees through things
Water damage and the rot that turns up behind it
Impact damage — vehicles, trees, fallen branches
Fire and flood reinstatement
Failed EQC and EQR repairs, which is still a live one in Christchurch

Rural and lifestyle block

Farm sheds, implement sheds, woolsheds and lifestyle block outbuildings. Same work, longer drive. We cover Selwyn and Waimakariri as standard.

Failed earthquake repairs

If an EQC or EQR repair has cracked open again, the repair itself is often the problem, not just the damage. A crack that is still moving will break a rigid epoxy repair exactly the way it broke the first one. We strip back, find out whether the crack has actually settled, and price the fix that will hold rather than the one that looks quickest.

Our own builders, not whoever's free

A lot of companies sub the whole job out. We don't. We're the main contractor and we carry our own team of builders who do the work themselves. Specialist trades — electrical, plumbing, painting — we coordinate on top.

What we don't do

We don't take on standalone electrical, plumbing, painting, tiling or asbestos removal. We coordinate those specialists where a job needs them — that's a normal part of being the main contractor — but we're not the people to ring if that's all you need.
We're not a handyman service either. We're builders, and we take building work.

What people say

We were very impressed with Jason's knowledge about the job and how he encouraged the painters to take the extra prep time to ensure a quality finish. In a world where everything is rushed, it is rare to find a company that pushes for that extra quality instead of speed. The workmen were polite and approachable, and we got the impression that they all knew what they were doing. They took good care of our home. I would have no hesitation recommending Cornerstone Building to anyone.

— James and Teresa Proudlove

During July–August your company completed repairs to my home… The work was done with consideration. My sincere thanks.

— Patricia Hall, Shirley

How it works

1. Tell us what you're after

Call, text, or send a photo through the form. A photo and a rough idea is usually enough for us to know whether it's our sort of job. If it's an insurance claim, tell us that too — it changes how we write the quote.

2. We come and look

We'll come out, have a proper look, and give you a written price. Free, and no obligation to go ahead.

3. We get it done

Our own builders, on the tools. You get a start date, and we hold to it. Every quoted job comes with a 12 month workmanship guarantee.
